As we are in the midst of exams, nearing the end of the year, I just want to exhort you with one verse:

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel.
– 2 Timothy 2:8

These were some of Paul’s final words to Timothy – that he would remember Jesus Christ, the reason why Paul endured his sufferings.

When we are drowned in the stresses of life, we have such a strong tendency to forget everything around us and narrow our focus to our immediate worries, as we talked about last Friday. But right now, as you read this, remind yourselves of the gospel - Jesus Christ, both God and man, lived a perfect life, died for all of your sins and rose again from the dead, so that you can have eternal life. And He did this, all of this, for me and for you. Wow.

This is our hope, our peace, our joy, our strength, our song. This is the reason why we worship. This is the reason why we suffer. This is the reason why we love.

This is the reason why we live.

Brothers and sisters, as we move through exams or into summer, let us pause for a minute to ask God to help us remember the gospel daily, that we may centre our days – our lives – around this truth, the truth of the gospel, the basis of our faith, the foundation of our lives.

The end of the year is undoubtedly a very stressful time. However, I urge you to take a 2.5-minute break from whatever you are doing to listen to this rendition of a classic song by Shane and Shane, called “Your Grace is Sufficient”. The lyrics are simple, and go like this:

Your grace is sufficient for me,
Your strength is made perfect when I am weak,
And all that I cling to, I lay at Your feet,
Your grace is sufficient for me.

I know that in these trying times, it is hard to remember that the things we often hold dearest in our hearts (academic success, “good works”, relationships with friends and family) need to be laid at the feet of our Lord Jesus Christ. These things can’t save us, and instead of clinging to them, let us fall on our knees in worship of our God, because His grace is the only thing that is truly sufficient for us.

It has recently come to my attention how little time there is left in the school year. And when I catch myself thinking “Where has all the time gone?!”, I am reminded of this verse in Psalm 90:

Teach us to number our days,
that we may gain a heart of wisdom. — Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Here, the prayer is not that we would know the exact number of days left in our lives. Instead, the prayer is that we would understand the frailty of life, how quickly life on earth can pass us by, and that we would view our lives as God does–to act as if we could see the whole of our life here on earth. With this kind of perspective, what would you spend your time on? What friendships would you invest in? Who would you show more love to? Brothers and sisters, I pray that we would live our everyday lives so that when we look back, we would not regret our actions. I pray that we would always seek the wisdom of God, fear the Lord, serve whole-heartedly, and love unconditionally. If we live this kind of life, we won’t look back at our time with regret, but joy in our use of the time God has given us here on earth.

I was overwhelmed with joy after this past Saturday’s Iron Chef event. It was so wonderful to come together as a fellowship and work together to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. After the event, there were people in the audience who began to ask questions about God, and others who were led by God to repent of their sins. Praise God for the work He has done through us! I am so thankful for this fellowship of Christ followers, and I pray that you will continue talking to your non-Christian friends about the Gospel — not out of “duty” but because we can’t help but talk about our great, awesome, and mighty God! It reminds me of Psalm 98, which reads:

Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
The LORD has made his salvation known
and revealed his righteousness to the nations. — Psalm 98:1-2

Brothers and sisters, God’s work of salvation through Jesus Christ is a truly marvelous thing. It is nothing that we have done to earn our salvation, but rather, it is God’s power, grace, and faithfulness — that He sent His Son to die on a cross, raise Him from the dead, and exalt Him to the right hand of God. And it is through our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour that we are forgiven of our sins and granted eternal life. The power of the Gospel is life-changing, and may all the glory, power, and praise be to our God, who chooses to use us to spread this Good News to those around us!
